Comments:
Of a total of 11 Nimrod MR2s converted for the ill-fated AWACS project, this was the first to fly. Following the cancellation of the project in December 1986 due to technical problems and severe cost over-runs, all of the airframes were reduced to produce as a spares source for the remaining Nimrod fleet. XZ286 was scrapped at Abingdon in 1991, with the rear section going to RAF Kinloss for ground instruction.
