Warsaw - 1st Air Base

By: Frank Grealish
Date: 8th May 2009
Location: Warsaw - Okecie (Frederic Chopin) (WAW / EPWA), Poland

The 1st Air Base (co-located with Warsaw - Okecie International Airport) was the last air base to be visited as part of the Polish Air Force Press Tour.

1st Air Base (1.blot - 1.Baza Lotnicza) is the home to the 36th Special Transport Aviation Regiment (36.splt - 36.Specjalny Pułk Lotnictwa Transportowego).

The main tasking of 36.splt is to operate VIP aircraft on behalf of the Polish Air Force & Government. Other tasks include humanitarian assistance, disaster relief (both at home and abroad) and transportation of organs for transplants.

The fleet consists of the Tupolev Tu-154, Yakovlev Yak-40 and PZL M28B Bryza fixed wing aircraft along with PZL W-3 Sokol, Mil Mi-8 and Bell 412HP helicopters. Examples of all aircraft operated by the unit were present during our visit except for the Bell 412HP.

The sun came out to play for this visit, unfortunately all the aircraft were static only, it would have been nice to photograph the aircraft in the air. The red and white aircraft looked immaculate in the sunshine, the colours of the national flag were put to good use, white aircraft with red cheat lines.

IrishAirPics would like to thank all the personnel at both Warsaw Air Base and at Polish Air Force Headquarters for making the visit possible and for their help & assistance during the visit.
