Lulea Air Base

Date: 8th & 9th March 2010
Location: Lulea - Kallax AB (LLA / ESPA), Sweden

Lulea Kallax Air Base is located about 5km south-east of Lulea, Sweden, near the village of Kallax, it is the most northern air base in Sweden.

Lulea Kallax Air Base is home to F21 Lulea, Norrbottens Flygflottilj, Norrbotten Air Force Wing, commonly known as just F21. Aircraft that were present at the time of our visit were:

- Saab JAS39 Gripen
- Saab Sk60
- Eurocopter Super Puma (HKP 10)

The main purpose of this visit was to capture Gripen operations in winter / snow conditions and we were not disappointed. On the first day of our visit the taxiway has still not been fully cleared of snow so that was nice to see.

Over the course of the two day visit we had the opportunity to photograph operations from various vantage points including alongside the runway, taxiways and from the control tower.

Other opportunities such as visits to hangars, maintenance facilities, base museum and the flightline for some night flying presented themselves. We even had the opportunity to visit the two derelict Viggens that were in approximately 1 metre of snow, Louise our escort had arranged for the air base snow blowers to clear a path for us to the aircraft.

All in all it was a good trip, we had snow, sunshine and nice aircraft to photograph, thanks to 4Aviation for arranging the visit, the Swedish Air Force for giving permission and Louise our escort for dealing with all our questions and requests.
